Leadership is taking responsibility to guide others in the face of uncertainty. It is a choice, a decision and a responsibility. A leader must focus on being effective, not right. He must understand himself and his natural disposition. His leadership style is unique, but he has probably one of the four or all the styles listed below:

  • A transactional leader: has a give and take approach. He uses carrots and sticks to achieve his ends. Example: President Trump
  • A transformational leader: inspires people to do their work through his charisma. He focuses not only on accomplishing tasks, but also on building a following base. Example: President Obama
  • An interactive leader: seeks his peers or followers inputs. He spends time on the process before taking action. Example: Marshall Ganz
  • A servant leader: focuses on serving his peers or followers by trying to do what is best for them or fulfilling their basic needs. He mostly provides support or guidance to his peers or followers. Example: Pope Francis

The leader’s style is not mutually exclusive and in most cases, his situations or his position dictates his leadership style. However, he must know his natural inclination to surround himself with the right people and work in the right environment to fulfill his aim. What is important, he must know that “the role of the leader is to define reality and give hope” to quote from Napoleon.
